Keeping animals in captivity is a problem. One solution discussed is to not “visit marine parks, zoos, or other establishments that hold wild animals in captivity” (Ten Ways You Can Help Animals). Instead, go see animals in places that allow you to see them in a humane, moral way, like national parks, nature reserves, animal sanctuaries, rehabilitation centers. The problem with this solution is that not everyone will stop, and the torture will continue. The Corporate part of these establishments will continue to feed off of the spectators for the money they can gain.

Another solution would be to ban the use of captive animals in circuses, and to shut down zoos and aquariums (MPs call for animal circus ban). After they shut them all down, the idea is to release them back into the world where they belong. There is a huge problem with this. Most of the animals have been raised in captivity since they were born and know no other life. Releasing them back into the wild would be a sure death as they don’t know how to defend themselves, how to catch food, or how to live with the wild species of their kind.

I propose that we ban the use of captive animals in circuses, and shut down zoos and aquarium. After that is successfully done, use the land that the aquariums and zoos are on to form sanctuaries for the animals. “A Sanctuary is a place where animals can come to live and be protected or the rest of their lives.  It’s a safe haven, where they receive the very best care possible” (What is a Sanctuary). In these sanctuaries, the animals will be kept in very good care, without the constant eye of spectators on them. The capture of animals will stop, and after all the ones in sanctuaries die, there won’t be any more animals suffering for the entertainment of humans in a corporately owned facility.

It is our job, as humans to do what is morally right. Keeping animals in captivity to suffer for the rest of their lives is obviously very wrong, but we can help. Stop the use of animals in circuses, zoos, and aquariums and let them live a better life in sanctuaries.
